Cooking: Purim Edition!

Last night at cooking we made Hamantaschen!! We reviewed the story of Purim and why we make Hamantaschen, and then we began to experiment! We added a mixture of strawberry jam, chocolate chips, and M&Ms in our Hamantaschen. And then just like the delivery of mishloach manot baskets to the less fortunate at Purim, we shared our goodies with the other Sha'arim classes!

Cooking Sha'arim!

This week in our Cooking Sha'arim, we continued our study on the differences between Ashkenazi and Sepharic cooking. This week we made a sweet Ashkenazi bread known as toffee cake. Next class we are hoping to tackle a Sephardic recipe to see which one we prefer!

Cooking goes Syrian!

The Tuesday night Cooking Sha'ar explored our first recipe with meat: Syrian meatballs, or Keftes! We talked about where Syria was located and what we associate when we hear Syria, and then we made our own meatballs and sauce! We like to make extra so that we can share and Rachel loved them!!

Cooking Sha'arim!!

Tonight was the first time the Cooking Sha'arim met for the year, and boy was it colorful! We got to unwrap brand new knives, chopped some veggies, and made, or attempted to make, omelets! We each got to cut up different vegetables so we could get the feel of different veggies. Then we each took a spin on the stove trying to make our own omelet, knowing that if we messed up the flip we would just get veggie-filled scrambled eggs. At the end of the class, we made sure we left the kitchen as spotless as it was before we got there. One participant even said it was an okay equivalent to a team practice! Woohoo Cooking!!!!!

6th Grade Tzdakah Cooking!

Today class 6E became a cooking factory! Lasagna, Garlic Bread and cookies were made in the masses. Last week the class venture to Trader Joe's to buy all our ingredients and today we divided and conquered! Lucy, Sarah and Zoe worked hard and created two beautiful veggie lasagnas. Jake and Alex were our garlic bread extraordinaries and Edward, Josh and Cory made cookies galore. The room smelled delicious! I was so pleased to see the groups work so well together . Everyone was excited about their job and eager to help out even if they didn't feel like an expert chef. All in all it was quite a successful cooking experience and I know class 6E is not only proud of their new cooking skills but also pleased that they can offer food made with love to a wonderful organization.

Trader Joe's Adventure

Last Thursday, 6th grade class 6E went on a field trip to Trader Joe's where they put their Tzdakah money to great use. Over the course of the year, the class had collected over $90 and they decided that they wanted to cook a full meal to donate to Rosie's Place to give to women and children a good, healthy, hot meal. The class picked the menu of spinach-mushroom lasagna, garlic bread and cookies. We went to Trader Joe's and bought all our ingredients so that we could cook. While at trader Joes they had to budget their money and even after doubling all our recpies we still had money left over! I was so proud to watch them hand over the money they had collected to purchase all the food. Next Step: Cooking!

Tuesday Night Madness!

The Cooking class got crazy last night with a Top Chef cook off. They were asked to research Jewish recipes and begin to understand what was Jewish about those foods. The winning recipe? Humantaschen!
