Sha'arim cooking has a curriculum that we try to adhere to, sort of. We have lesson plans and recipes, but the girls in this sha'ar really like having a say in what they make. We were supposed to talk about Georgian Jews this week, and while we talked a little bit about the laws of kashrut and what we knew, we didn't have time to make the Georgian cheese bread that was in the lesson plan. The girls had requested to make a dessert, so I found a recipe for Ukranian Honey Cake. While it wasn't Georgian, it was a recipe from a similar area of the world, and part of the former USSR, where many of our families came from. We followed the recipe, and were able to make a pretty great cake just in time! We liked it, and it was devoured by the Senior Sha'ar class when they were done. Sounds like a success to me! We also had some time while it was cooking, and started researching what we could make next time, when we will study about Syrian Jews. We are looking to do something with meat next time!
